Foreigners in Bulgaria

Residence, company registration, property and family matters — handled in English, French, Russian or Bulgarian.

How long can a non-EU citizen stay in Bulgaria without a residence permit?

A short stay is up to 3 months. Longer stays need a residence permit.

What types of residence permit exist for non-EU citizens?

The official portal lists continuous residence (up to 1 year), long-term residence (an initial 5 years, renewable) and permanent residence (unlimited term). The Migration Directorate of the Ministry of the Interior decides.

Foreign clients are a large part of my practice. I work in English, French, Russian and Bulgarian, and can act for you remotely under a power of attorney.

Staying and living in Bulgaria

For citizens of countries outside the EU, the official portal of the Bulgarian administration describes the following stages:

Permits are issued by the Migration Directorate of the Ministry of the Interior. For continuous residence the applicant has to show accommodation, health and social insurance and sufficient funds (at least the minimum wage or a pension). The exact documents and conditions depend on the legal basis of your stay, so I assess each case individually before an application is made.

Rules for EU citizens are different and depend on the situation. Please ask me in a consultation rather than relying on a general summary.
